RuneScape's Reignited Never Caught Fire
The studio behind the 25-year-old online game scrapped a planned fresh-start character type with its own economy after players said it would split the community. The December early-game updates and a free membership trial stay.

Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a new character type with its own economy, just 12 days after announcing it, saying it had misjudged how its longtime players would take it.
The studio announced the project at its RuneFest event on October 3, with a launch date of December 2 [1]. On October 15 it said it would not go ahead [4]. Reignited was a plan, not a shipped game, but it was meant to be the biggest change to how RuneScape welcomes newcomers in years.
What Reignited was
RuneScape is a fantasy online game that has run since 2001, and its pull on players is accumulated time: skills trained for years, items collected, a market where goods change hands. Jagex pitched Reignited as a fresh start for new and returning players, with a remastered early journey, an Adventure Guide, a new economy and new hiscores, the ranking tables that show who stands where [1].
Reignited characters would be a permanent type, with no paid progression and 10 days of free access to members' content after launch [1]. They could share game worlds, chat, clans and homesteads with veteran characters. They could not trade with them, use the same Grand Exchange, the game's player-to-player market, or share boss instances. A veteran character could not be converted into a Reignited one [1].
That last rule did much of the damage. A newcomer got a clean slate. A veteran got a wall.
Twelve days
Three days after the announcement, on October 6, Jagex apologised. It said it had made existing players feel they were no longer its focus. It listed the worries it had heard: a split community, veteran accounts losing relevance, restricted interaction, locked items and cosmetics, and the need for a separate membership [3].
On October 9 the studio went further in public and floated revisions. These included ways to let players Reignite an existing character within their membership, recognition for veteran achievements, and possibly removing Reignited-only worlds. Jagex was careful to say these were ideas under consideration, not promised changes [5].
Six days later it dropped the whole thing. Associate creative director Mod Ryan said Jagex had received "a ton of different perspectives" and that the studio had decided to cancel [4]. He said Jagex did not want to grow RuneScape at the expense of its existing community. He also pointed to an earlier combat change that, he said, took more than a decade to recover from [4].
Jagex has not said how much feedback it received, through which channels, or why it moved from revising to cancelling in six days. It did not say feedback was the only factor. It cited feedback and said it had missed the mark [4].
What stays
The cancellation does not touch the December 2 release of the Adventure Guide, the first part of the Remastered Journey and other improvements [4]. The 10-day membership trial also survives, running from December 2 to December 12, 2026 [4].
It applies to new characters and to characters that have not held membership since June 2, 2026. Jagex said it does not cover Old School RuneScape members' worlds, and players with active membership since June 2 will not get refunds [4].
The 2027 roadmap is unchanged, with combat and skilling content, older storylines continuing, an Agility rework and the studio's Road to Restoration work. Plugins are scheduled to launch on October 19 [4].
IGN reported that some players welcomed the news in subreddit posts, one saying it would help rebuild trust [2]. Those comments show how some players reacted. They are not a measure of the whole community.
Who a long-running game belongs to
The business logic behind Reignited was plain enough, and Jagex put the numbers on the table. It said RuneScape had hundreds of thousands of members and that membership had been drifting down slightly for a long time [5].
A game in that position wants new blood. A separate economy was meant to spare newcomers a market and a ranking table dominated by people with a quarter-century head start [1].
But the same studio, in the same week, said it believed the existing community could sustain itself for years [5]. Those two statements pull in opposite directions. A game that can carry on with its veterans has little need to risk them, and a game that needs growth cannot ignore everyone who has not yet arrived.
My own view is that Jagex understood the second half of that bargain only after it had announced the first. In a game like this, the economy and the ladder are not decoration around the content. They are the content, built over years by the players themselves. Reignited offered newcomers a door and asked veterans to accept that the door led somewhere they could not follow. The veterans said no, loudly, and the studio heard it fast.
It is to Jagex's credit that it said so plainly and did not spend months on a redesign nobody had asked for.
Whether that makes the episode a lesson that players hold a veto over their game is a larger claim than the record supports. What the record shows is a studio that read the room twice in 12 days, first with an apology and then with a retreat.
The harder question is left over. The December 2 Adventure Guide and the remastered early journey are now the whole of Jagex's answer to a fair problem, how to make a 25-year-old game less daunting to join. Whether they do the job without a separate economy will be visible in the trial that runs from December 2 to December 12.
