Building AI for Customers Could Pay Nearly a Million Yuan a Year

ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are reportedly expanding recruitment for engineers who turn AI models into working business applications. The hiring push puts a premium on getting the technology to work inside a customer's operations.

Unconfirmed: this story rests on reports that no primary source has confirmed yet. Later editions will follow it up.

ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are expanding hiring for engineers who build AI applications with customers, with annual packages approaching one million yuan, the South China Morning Post reported. [1]

The newspaper's October 25 report describes a recruitment and training push for forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs. These engineers work directly with customers to develop applications and fit them into business operations, taking AI beyond a general-purpose model and into a particular company's work. [1]

The reported packages approach one million yuan a year, about US$149,739. [1]

The commercial logic is straightforward: a model's capabilities only become useful to a customer when someone makes them work in that customer's business. The reported hiring push suggests that the people who bridge that gap are becoming a more valuable part of the AI workforce.

A job at the customer's end of AI

An FDE sits at the boundary between the supplier of AI technology and the business buying it. As SCMP describes the role, the engineer develops an application with the customer and integrates it into the customer's operations. [1]

That gives the job a different centre of gravity from work on a foundational model, the general-purpose technology on which applications can be built. The immediate task is to make an application serve a specific business, rather than improve a model for many possible users. [1]

This is where the reported pay becomes interesting. It points to a premium on delivery: connecting the capabilities of a model to something a business can use. It does not establish that application work has overtaken model research in value. It does show why an AI supplier would compete for engineers who can close the distance between the two.

A sharp rise, from an undisclosed base

Chinese FDE job postings rose 1,523 percent in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to Maimai data cited by SCMP. The newspaper said FDEs were the fastest-growing AI technical role covered by those figures. [1]

That is more than a sixteenfold increase. A rise of that size makes customer deployment worth watching as a distinct hiring market, even before the salary figure enters the calculation.

Lin Fan, chief executive of Maimai, also described a 1,523 percent year-on-year increase in FDE recruitment on the platform in an interview published by Jiemian News and reproduced on Sohu. He said demand was moving beyond foundational-model work towards application development and helping businesses use AI. [2]

There are limits to the numbers. The starting volume and precise counting basis behind the growth figure are not disclosed. SCMP gives no company-by-company salary breakdown, package structure, seniority requirements or direct comment from ByteDance, Tencent or Alibaba, so the near-million-yuan figure cannot be treated as a standard offer from each company. [1][2]

The next test is the job itself

For now, the strongest signal is the combination of reported hiring expansion at three major technology companies and rapid growth in recruitment for a role built around customer use. [1] The hard work receiving attention here is the work of making AI fit.

The next test will be concrete: the companies' own vacancies and disclosures, showing how many engineers they want, what those engineers must deliver and how the advertised pay is made up. Those details will show how far this reported premium extends beyond the most sought-after hires.
