Report: 'Signal' sequel set for December 7, but tvN won't confirm it

A Korean outlet says the long-awaited follow-up to the 2016 drama will premiere with two episodes on December 7. The broadcaster says no schedule exists, and the show's lead actor has retired amid controversy.

Developing: this story is still unfolding and details may change.

A Korean outlet reported on October 25 that tvN's sequel to its 2016 drama "Signal" will premiere on December 7. The network answered that nothing has been confirmed, so the date stays a report and not an announcement. [1][2]

The sequel is titled "The Second Signal." [1] It reunites the original leads Cho Jin-woong, Kim Hye-soo and Lee Je-hoon, according to StarNews. [2] A decade after the first season, it is the kind of return that fans of Korean television have waited for with some hunger and some doubt.

What was reported

MyDaily said the premiere had slipped from a planned November 30 to December 7, a delay of one week, and that the first two episodes would air together. [1] StarNews, relaying the same report, described it as a Monday-Tuesday drama beginning on that date. [2]

CHOSUNBIZ, citing the outlet OSEN, added a detail on pacing. The plan, it said, is two episodes on December 7, then one episode a day from December 8. [3]

A double premiere followed by a nightly run suggests a schedule someone has actually drawn up. It does not make it a schedule anyone has approved.

What tvN said

The network's reply was short. "Nothing has yet been confirmed regarding the programming of 'The Second Signal,'" tvN said, according to Soompi. [1] StarNews quoted the network as saying, "There is no confirmed schedule." [2]

That is a denial of confirmation, not a denial of the date. tvN did not say December 7 is wrong, and it did not say it is right. Readers who take the answer as a wink are reading something into it that the words do not hold. The sensible reading is the literal one: as of October 25, the network had not committed.

That matters because this show has already lost one slot.

A hold, and the reason for it

The sequel was originally slated for June 2026, as part of tvN's plans for its 20th anniversary. Scheduling was then put on hold after controversy surrounding Cho Jin-woong, according to CHOSUNBIZ. [3]

StarNews reported that Cho announced his retirement from acting amid allegations about his past, including a juvenile criminal record, drunk driving and assault. It quoted him apologizing for his past actions and saying he would stop all activities. [2]

His agency said it had confirmed wrongful acts during his minority. It added that the exact circumstances could not be fully determined after about 30 years, and that related legal procedures had concluded, CHOSUNBIZ reported. [3]

The allegations beyond the agency's statement are reported as allegations, and the sources here do not set out their details or establish them.

The footage question

Cho is one of the three leads of a sequel whose appeal rests on seeing the original cast together again. That left the production with a problem a television calendar cannot solve.

According to CHOSUNBIZ, the production team considered using AI or editing Cho's footage. The final decision was to air his scenes without those changes. [3] Soompi's summary carries the same decision. [1]

The choice cuts both ways. Leaving the footage intact keeps the drama whole. It also means a broadcaster is putting on air a performance by an actor who has said he is stepping away, in the middle of a public argument about his past.

Neither tvN nor the production has explained in the material available how the scenes will be presented, or whether the broadcast will carry any note about them.

Why the date matters

Broadcasters rarely let a prestige title float. A slot in the year-end schedule has to be cleared, promoted and defended against rival launches, and a title that has already been moved once is a title the network will think hard about moving again. A date reported by one outlet and left unconfirmed by the network is an invitation to fans, not a promise.

The 20th-anniversary framing also gives the sequel weight beyond a single drama. It was meant to be a centerpiece, and it has become instead a test of how a channel handles an expensive, much-wanted show when its lead actor leaves the profession.

For now the facts are thin and they are all in one direction. A premiere date has been reported. A network has declined to confirm it. A hold has been lifted in practice, if not on paper, since someone is evidently talking about episodes and nights of the week. That is as far as the record goes.

What to watch

The next step is tvN's own. If December 7 is real, the network will need to announce it, with the usual trailer and press notice, well ahead of the night. If it is not, the silence will go on, and the sequel will sit where it has sat since June. Fans will know which way it went when a broadcast date appears on tvN's schedule, or when it doesn't.

Our call

The first episode of tvN's "The Second Signal" will air on tvN in South Korea on or before December 31, 2026.

Outlets report a concrete plan of a double premiere on December 7 followed by nightly episodes, and the production has already settled how to handle Cho Jin-woong's footage, yet tvN still says nothing is confirmed after an earlier hold.
