Kimi Says Sorry and Hands Back 25% of Every Subscriber's Quota

Moonshot AI says it has cut unnecessary helper-agent calls and output length after complaints about paid allowances. It has not quantified how much further subscribers' quotas will now go.

Developing: this story is still unfolding and details may change.

Moonshot AI apologized on October 25 for rate limits and unnecessary quota use on Kimi K3.1 Pro, offering subscribers a reset after its new model's launch. [2][3]

The company said every subscriber on every plan would receive a one-time reset restoring 25% of their monthly allowance. Accounts that had used less than 25% would have their recorded usage returned to zero. [2][3]

The apology came two days after K3.1 Pro launched across Kimi's web, work and coding products and its API, which lets developers connect software to the model. Moonshot also said it had adjusted subscription settings to reduce unnecessary calls to helper AI agents and shorten outputs. [1][2][4]

For paying users, the launch exposed two constraints beyond the model's capabilities: how often they could use it and how quickly a task could consume their allowance. A rate limit caps requests over a set period. A monthly quota limits total usage, so an account can face a temporary restriction even before exhausting its monthly pool.

"These were our issues, and we should have fixed them sooner," Kimi said in its apology. [2][3]

What subscribers get back

Moonshot described the reset as equivalent to one week's usage. The announced remedy covers subscribers across every plan, rather than only those who complained about K3.1 Pro. [2][3]

TechcityAuthority said paying users complained after the launch, with some subscribers saying their limits ran out within minutes. It also relayed an unnamed user's account that a single test build consumed more than a tenth of a monthly quota. The article did not independently verify those complaint accounts. [3]

The test-build account gives a concrete example of the frustration behind the apology: a subscriber said one trial had consumed a substantial share of an allowance intended for a month. It does not establish how much a typical build consumes or how often other subscribers encountered the same problem. [3]

The monthly usage pool is shared across Kimi on the web, Kimi Work and Kimi Code, according to TechcityAuthority. Usage in one of those products therefore draws on the allowance available to the others. [3]

That shared pool puts the web service and coding tools within the same monthly budget. Switching between those products does not mean switching to a separate allowance. [3]

Fewer helper calls, shorter answers

Moonshot's changes target two ways an AI task can expand. A sub-agent is a separate helper AI run assigned part of a larger job. Launching unnecessary helpers adds work, while longer answers generate more output. The company said it was reducing both unnecessary sub-agent calls and output length to make quotas last longer. [2][3]

The changes concern how the subscription service runs tasks, alongside the adjustment to subscribers' recorded usage. Moonshot said it had already adjusted plan parameters, while describing reductions in unnecessary helper calls and output length as its response to quota consumption. [2][3]

Moonshot has not published the changed rate-limit thresholds or plan settings, before-and-after quota figures, or a count of affected subscribers. Whether all accounts have received the reset, and how much longer allowances now last in real use, is also unconfirmed. [2][3]

The launch continues

Kimi announced K3.1 Pro on October 23 alongside a Highspeed version. Its official launch announcement listed availability through Kimi.com, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and the API. The apology followed on October 25, putting the subscription changes within the model's opening days. [1][2][4]

The company describes Pro as a version of Kimi K3 refined through additional training, with a context window of one million tokens, the units of text a model processes. A context window determines how much material it can handle at once, rather than how much a subscriber may use over a month. [1][4]

Moonshot's next dated milestone is November 4, 2026, when it has said it plans to release the full model weights, the learned numerical values that define the model. [1][4]
