Report: Footage of a Persona 1 Remake Leaks, and Fans Have Spotted Debug Text

A clip of nearly two minutes appears to show Atlus remaking the first Persona, a strange 1996 RPG from before the series became famous for school-life sims. Nobody has verified it, and Atlus has not announced a remake.

Unconfirmed: this story rests on reports that no primary source has confirmed yet. Later editions will follow it up.

Nearly two minutes of unverified footage that appears to show a remake of Persona, the 1996 role-playing game that began Atlus's famous series, has leaked online, according to Eurogamer. [1]

The publication said on November 1, 2026 that it could not verify the clip and that Atlus has not announced a Persona 1 remake. [1] Treat it as a rumour with some interesting fingerprints on it, not as news from the studio.

What the clip shows

According to Eurogamer, the footage was shared on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit and uploaded to the file host Gofile on October 31 under a Japanese filename that translates as "Megami Ibunroku Persona Remake". [1] That is the original game's Japanese title. [2]

It shows stylish, modern-looking menus and combat that Eurogamer compares to Persona 5 and Persona 3 Reload. There is also a short scene in the manner of the series' "social links", the relationship-building episodes that define the later games. It is drawn in a noticeably different, almost graphic-novel art style. [1]

The clip also carries what may be a subtitle, "Be Your True Mind". That phrase is associated with the original Japanese release. [1][2]

Why some fans believe it

Eurogamer reported that fans have pointed to three details they think lend the clip credibility. One is apparent Unreal Engine debug text on screen during a battle. Another is a new remix of the Pandora theme from the original PlayStation game. The third is the protagonist being referred to as "Boy With Earring". [1]

Those are clues, not proof. Debug text, a remixed track and a nickname can all be faked by someone patient, and no one has said who first shared the footage or where it came from. [1]

The timing is at least not absurd. In an interview published on September 7, 2026, series producer Kazuhisa Wada said remakes or remasters of Persona 1 and 2 were "something we'll probably eventually do". He described remakes as a form of cultural preservation and said Atlus had a duty to keep older games available. [3]

There is a practical reason for that duty. Eurogamer reported that Persona 1 and 2 were the only mainline Persona games not readily available to buy on modern systems. [3] Wada's remark was a general intention, though, and nothing in it confirms that this particular project exists.

The official Persona Channel site lists activity for the series' 30th anniversary and news of Persona 4 Revival. Its page text carries no word of a Persona 1 remake. [4] A company site that is silent proves little either way. Studios do not usually announce things because a clip is loose.

The game underneath

The interesting question is not whether the footage is real. It is what a real remake would be remaking.

Persona was released in Japan in 1996 as Megami Ibunroku Persona. [2] Its heroes are high-school students in Japan who gain the power to summon Personas after playing a fortune-telling game. Then supernatural trouble comes to their town. [2]

It does not play like the games that made the name. The original moves through dungeons in first person and fights its battles on a grid-based arena. [2] Its story splits into a main route, called SEBEC, and an alternate one, called Snow Queen. [2]

What it lacks is the social-sim machinery that later players came to think of as Persona itself. The game predates it. [2] The first game is older, odder and less polite than its descendants.

That is why the leaked social-link scene catches the eye. If it is genuine, it would be an addition to the old game's vocabulary, not something the 1996 original had. [1][2] Whether it is a single flourish or a sign that the whole game has been rebuilt around later habits, the clip cannot say.

Preserve or polish

A remake always makes a quiet choice about memory. It can keep what was strange about the old thing, or it can keep what people think they remember about the series and file the rest away.

Here the choice is sharp. Does a remake keep the first-person dungeons and the grid battles, or swap them for the combat the leak resembles? Does it keep both story routes? Does it keep the unsettled tone of a game about teenagers confronting something supernatural, or tune it to the mood of the school-life years? None of that is answered by two minutes of video. [1][2]

Wada's own framing sets the test. If a remake is cultural preservation, then the oddities are the thing to be preserved. A version that looks and plays like Persona 5 with a 1996 plot draped over it would make the game available again, but it would not preserve much. [3]

There is also the matter of the title. Nobody knows whether "Be Your True Mind" is a subtitle, a working label or a detail someone added, and no platform or release plan has surfaced. [1]

The next steps are plain enough. Either the footage is authenticated or debunked, or Atlus speaks. With the series marking 30 years, the studio has reason to have something to show. [4] Until it does, this is a clip with a good pedigree of details and no owner.

Our call

Atlus officially announces a remake of the first Persona game, the 1996 Megami Ibunroku Persona, by January 31, 2027.

A detailed clip using the original Japanese title, the series producer saying in September 2026 that Persona 1 and 2 remakes would probably happen eventually, and the series' 30th anniversary all point toward an announcement, though the footage is unverified and Atlus may hold it for later.

How we will check: Check Atlus's official channels, including the Persona Channel site and the series' official social accounts, and major games press, for an official announcement or trailer for a remake of the first Persona game. A leak, a rating-board listing or a rumour does not count.
