27 billion posts, and Reddit wants you logged in before you read one
Reddit says it will move toward a logged-in-only site, with tests outside the United States this quarter. Even if accounts stay free, asking people to join before they can read changes what the archive is for.
Reddit has announced that it wants everyone to sign in, and the company's own numbers show it is not doing this because it is short of money.
On its third-quarter earnings call on October 29, 2026, CEO Steve Huffman said shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience was a key part of keeping new audiences. My view is that this is no neutral product tweak. Putting an account in front of one of the last great searchable public squares on the web is a loss for culture, and the people who pay for it are the ones who never see the bill.
