35 of 41 dead in Donetsk, Ukraine says, as glide bombs hit Zaporizhzhia

Donetsk accounted for 35 of the reported deaths, while residential buildings were hit in Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine's Air Force said jet-powered Shahed-type attack drones made up more than two-thirds of the overnight launches.

Developing: this story is still unfolding and details may change.

Russian attacks killed at least 41 people and injured 67 across Ukraine over the past day, Ukrainian authorities reported, with the heaviest death toll in Donetsk Oblast. [1]

The figures, reported on October 9, 2026, include 35 deaths in Donetsk and two in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where officials said glide bombs struck residential buildings in the regional capital. Deaths were also reported in Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts. [1]

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 136 drones overnight, including 93 jet-powered Shahed-type drones. Shahed-type drones are one-way attack aircraft, designed to crash into their targets rather than return to base. The Air Force reported shooting down or suppressing 114 drones. [1]

The regional accounts put the greatest loss of life in eastern Ukraine, while reporting deaths as far west as Ivano-Frankivsk. The casualty figures cover the preceding day, whereas the drone figures describe the overnight attack. They are separate measures of the assault, not a death toll attributed solely to drones. [1]

These remain developing Ukrainian official accounts, without independent confirmation in the material reviewed for this article. That material contains no Russian response to these specific attacks. The reports also differ by one on the number injured in Donetsk, affecting the national injury total. [1][2]

Donetsk bears the heaviest toll

Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin reported 32 people killed in Kramatorsk and three in Bilenke. Together, those deaths account for 35 of the 41 in the national tally, or about 85%. Both reports give the same death toll and breakdown. [1][2]

Kramatorsk alone accounts for more than three-quarters of the reported deaths nationwide. Its reported toll of 32 is more than five times the combined death count in all the regions outside Donetsk included in the national tally. [1]

The Kyiv Independent's compilation gives 24 injured in Donetsk. Ukrinform, citing Filashkin's Facebook post, gives 25. These are two reports of the governor's account, rather than separate confirmation of the casualties. [1][2]

The national total of 67 injured uses the lower Donetsk figure. Substituting 25, with every other regional count unchanged, would raise the total to 68. Neither report explains the difference, which requires checking against the underlying regional statement. [1][2]

Outside Donetsk, regional authorities reported two people killed and three injured in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, one killed and 14 injured in Sumy Oblast, and one killed in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Along with Zaporizhzhia's two deaths, those figures account for the other six people in the national death toll. [1]

The reported injuries were spread more widely than the deaths. Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy together accounted for 56 of the 67 injuries in the national compilation, about 84%. [1]

Authorities also reported four injured in Kherson Oblast, three in Kharkiv Oblast and one in Chernihiv Oblast. The Sumy injuries included two 12-year-old boys, while the reported injuries in Kherson and Kharkiv also included children. [1]

Glide bombs hit homes in Zaporizhzhia

In Zaporizhzhia city, Russian glide bombs destroyed or damaged residential buildings, killing one person and injuring seven, including a child, according to Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Defense Council. Glide bombs are air-dropped weapons that can travel towards a target after release. [1]

The city casualties form part of Fedorov's wider regional count of two killed and 18 injured over the day. The regional figures therefore include another death and 11 other injuries beyond those reported in the city strike. [1]

Zaporizhzhia is both the name of the city and of the surrounding oblast, or administrative region. The distinction matters here because the attack on residential buildings was one part of a much wider regional account.

Fedorov reported 1,039 Russian strikes on 51 settlements across Zaporizhzhia Oblast during the day. That count describes attacks across the region, rather than 1,039 strikes on the city itself. [1]

It also measures something different from the Air Force's nationwide overnight drone count. Adding the regional strikes to the drone launches would produce a misleading weapons total, because the reports cover different areas and periods. [1]

Jet-powered drones dominate the overnight count

The 93 jet-powered Shahed-type aircraft represented about 68% of the 136 drones the Air Force said Russia launched overnight. The other 43 launches fell outside that identified jet-powered group. [1]

The Air Force said Ukrainian defences shot down or suppressed 77 of the 93 jet-powered drones, about 83%. Across all drone types, the reported total of 114 shot down or suppressed represented about 84% of launches. The combined category is not a count of aircraft physically destroyed. [1]

That leaves 22 drones outside the reported shot-down-or-suppressed total, including 16 jet-powered aircraft, without establishing that all of them hit targets. The Air Force separately reported drone strikes at eight locations and debris from intercepted drones at seven locations. [1]

The next checks are updated regional casualty statements, the Donetsk injury count and reports of damage at those eight drone-strike locations.
