Jay-Z Books Himself for the Super Bowl Halftime Show
The rapper whose company has produced the NFL's halftime show since 2019 will headline it on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show on February 14, 2027, the NFL, Roc Nation and Apple Music announced, putting the man whose company has produced the show since 2019 on its stage [2][4].
The announcement came on October 26, 2026 [2][4]. Super Bowl LXI is set for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and the NFL says the game and show will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with mobile viewing on NFL+ [2]. Pitchfork reports that ESPN will televise the game for the first time and that ABC will air it for the first time since 2006 [1].
The booking is unusual because of who is making it. Roc Nation, the entertainment company Jay-Z founded, has partnered with the league on the halftime show since 2019, and the NFL says it has produced the show since that partnership began [2]. The Los Angeles Times reports that Jay-Z has had the final say on who performs since 2020, and that the league and Roc Nation extended their deal in 2024 for another five years [4].
In plain terms, the person who has had the last word on who plays the biggest stage in American entertainment will now play it himself.
"A dream come true"
Jay-Z framed it as a career arc, not a coup. "From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey," he said in a statement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true." [1][3][4]
Reasonable Doubt, his debut album, came out in 1996 [3][4].
He had telegraphed some reluctance. In 2024 he said he had thought it would be selfish to choose himself too early, and added, "Maybe one year. Maybe." [1][4]
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league had asked Jay-Z to take the stage one day, whenever the moment felt right to him, and welcomed the booking [3][4].
That is a polite way of describing a decision the league had effectively left to him. Nothing in the announcements says how the NFL and Roc Nation handled the obvious awkwardness of a selector selecting himself. Neither has described it publicly so far.
The shortlist nobody confirmed
The Los Angeles Times reported that Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Harry Styles were also reportedly in contention for 2027. The paper does not name its sources for that detail, and neither the league nor Roc Nation has commented on it [4]. It is best read as gossip with a good address.
What is confirmed is the machinery behind the show. Roc Nation will executive-produce, and Hamish Hamilton will direct [4]. The set list, the guests and the staging have not been announced.
Why now, and why him
The timing is neat. Jay-Z played two shows at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24, three days before the announcement, as part of a run celebrating the anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint [2][4]. That run also included stadium dates in New York, London and Paris [3][4]. He will walk onto the halftime field having just played the same building.
That answers the question that hangs over any curator who steps into the spotlight, which is whether he still has the stamina and the pull for the main event. A run of stadium dates is a fair rehearsal. The halftime show is a different kind of test, because it plays to an audience that did not necessarily buy a ticket to see you. The previous season's Super Bowl drew almost 125 million viewers, according to the Los Angeles Times [4]. Many of them will be there for the football, and the show has to win them over fast.
I think he can. The bigger risk is not his command of the stage, which two nights at SoFi should settle, but the suspicion of a closed loop. When one company advises the league, produces the show and has the say on the act, and the act is the founder, the NFL has handed its most public music decision to a single circle. Jay-Z's own 2024 remark about selfishness suggests he saw the problem coming. Booking himself is the way he has chosen to answer it, by waiting until the show was established and then walking onto it.
Family history of the stage
The NFL itself draws the family lines. Beyoncé, Jay-Z's wife, headlined in 2013 and appeared during Coldplay's 2016 show, and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg headlined the previous Super Bowl at SoFi in 2022 [2][4]. Those are points of comparison, not hints about who will join him. No guests have been named.
SoFi is in Inglewood. Jay-Z has not described the booking as a homecoming, and nothing in the announcements does either.
The shape of the 2027 show now depends on what he chooses to put in it and who he calls. With Roc Nation executive-producing, the reveal may well wait for the night itself. For now, the date is fixed and the headliner is the one person who did not need anyone else's permission.
Our call
The NFL, Roc Nation, Apple Music or Jay-Z will publicly confirm at least one guest performer for Jay-Z's Super Bowl LXI halftime show before January 25, 2027.
Beyond the headliner, producer and director, nothing about the set has been announced, and with Roc Nation executive-producing the show the guest list is more likely to be saved for the night itself.
