Ukraine's acting Zaporizhzhia governor reported 53 people killed in the November 2 strike on Komyshuvakha, as the search entered its fifth day without a final toll. [1] [2]

Mykhailo Semikin gave the figure on November 6. Ukrainian officials attribute the attack to Russia and say bombs struck a school used to distribute humanitarian aid, followed by a shelter where people had taken cover. [1] [2]

Two rescue workers and a military medic who went to help the wounded were among those killed, according to The Kyiv Independent. The newspaper described the strike as the deadliest Russian attack in Zaporizhzhia Oblast since the full-scale invasion began. [1]

The search is taking place in a front-line village that had about 5,000 residents before the invasion. Local authorities said its last remaining children were evacuated in June 2026 as conditions worsened. The school was serving residents who stayed behind. [1]

The Daily Inference reported on November 3 that the toll had reached at least 33 and that President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 50 people could still be trapped beneath the aid site's rubble. Semikin's latest figure puts the reported death toll 20 higher than that earlier count. [1] [2]

Two official counts, no final toll

The November 6 updates came almost together. Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported 50 deaths as of 10:49 that morning, according to Interfax-Ukraine. Semikin posted the figure of 53 at 10:51. [2]

The difference between those figures has not been explained, and neither is a final count. No current number of people still missing or awaiting identification has been reported. The strike's circumstances have not been independently verified, and no Russian response has been reported. [1] [2] [3]

For now, 53 is the toll reported by the acting regional governor. The emergency service's separate figure matters because it shows that the official accounts had not yet converged even as the operation reached its fifth day. Both describe the same November 2 attack, rather than a new strike. [1] [2]

Zelensky's earlier estimate of people potentially trapped beneath the rubble is not a current missing-person count and cannot be used to calculate how many people rescuers are still searching for.

The two updates were separated by two minutes, but their publication times alone do not explain the three-person gap. Interfax-Ukraine reported both figures without reconciling them. It would be premature to describe that difference as three additional bodies recovered between the announcements. [2]

An aid site, then a shelter

The Ukrainian account begins at a school that had taken on another role: distributing humanitarian aid to people remaining in Komyshuvakha. Bombs hit that building on November 2, according to Ukrainian officials. Further bombs then hit a shelter where people had taken cover. [1] [2] [3]

Zelensky said another nine aerial bombs were dropped on the shelter after the initial strike. The Kyiv Independent reported that one of the weapons used in the attack was a three-ton FAB-3000, a heavy aerial bomb. [1] [3]

That reported sequence puts the shelter strike after people had already sought cover from the first attack. It also places the aid distribution school and the place of refuge within the same emergency, rather than describing separate attacks on different days. [1] [3]

The Daily Inference reported on November 2 that Zelensky said a school providing weekly aid had been struck, followed by a place where people were sheltering. Rescuers were already searching the rubble.

The Kyiv Independent's subsequent account, published on November 4 and updated on November 5, put the death toll at 40 while the search was in its third day. The governor's November 6 figure is 13 higher. The successive totals trace the growing known toll from the original attack as rescue work continued. [1] [3]

The search continues

The operation had run from November 2 into November 6, with rescuers working across five calendar days. Semikin's announcement did not mark its conclusion, and the reported 53 deaths remained a provisional accounting. [1] [2]

Authorities still had to bring the operation to a close and establish a final death toll. The next official accounting must resolve the number killed and the fate of anyone still unaccounted for. [1] [2]
